Custom Cedar Wood Well

Custom cedar wood window well — close-up exterior view Calgary Finished cedar and PT wood window well with egress slider Calgary

Built from 4×6 cedar or pressure-treated lumber, custom-sized to your opening. A warm, natural aesthetic that blends with landscaping, garden beds, and wood decks. Popular for front-yard and side-yard installations where appearance matters.

Cedar naturally resists moisture and insects. Unlike untreated wood, it holds up well in Calgary's climate — though it will require periodic staining or sealing to maintain appearance over the years.

From $850–$1,950 + GST depending on size & configuration

Alternative

Composite / Plastic Well

UV-resistant, frost-resistant, and waterproof composite material that won't rust like steel or require sealing like wood. Installs as a single piece for quick setup. A good middle-ground — lighter than steel, more durable than wood over time.

Available in standard egress sizes. Ask about availability on your specific project — not all sizes are stocked year-round.

  • UV, water, and frost resistant
  • No rust, no rot, no sealing required
  • One-piece installation
  • Good middle-ground option

Window Well Code Requirements
in Calgary

The Alberta Building Code sets minimum standards for window wells that must be met for your egress window to pass inspection. These aren't optional guidelines — they're enforced through the permit and inspection process.

We size and install every window well to meet or exceed these minimums. Your installation passes inspection the first time.

Proper Drainage, Every Time

A window well without drainage is a water collection bowl. When it fills, water finds its way into your basement. We build drainage in from the start — not as an afterthought.

  • 1

    Drainage Stone Base

Every window well we install gets a proper layer of clean drainage gravel at the base. This allows water to percolate away from the foundation rather than pooling against it.

  • 2

    Grading Away from the Foundation

We ensure the backfill around the well is graded to direct surface water away. Poor grading is one of the most common causes of window well flooding.

  • 3

Weeping Tile Connection & Auger Drain (If Required)

For problem areas with heavy water flow or high water tables, we offer an auger drain add-on: an 8" auger + 4" weeping tile line connects the window well base directly into your existing drainage system for active water removal. This is not required on most installs but is available for sites where standard gravel drainage isn't sufficient. Ask about this when you get your quote.

Window Well Covers

A well cover keeps debris, rain, and snow out of your window well — reducing maintenance and extending the life of the well. We recommend covers for all installations.

Two main options:

  • Polycarbonate bubble cover — clear dome that lets light in while keeping water and debris out. The most popular choice. Sits over the well and can be lifted from inside for emergency egress.
  • Flat metal grate cover — galvanized steel grate that allows light and air flow. Good for well locations prone to heavy debris. Can be removed easily from inside.

Note: Covers must not impede emergency egress — they need to be openable from inside without tools or keys. We ensure any cover we install meets this requirement.

Need a Ladder?

If your window well is deeper than 44 inches (approx. 1.1 m), the Alberta Building Code requires a permanently fixed ladder or steps. We supply and install galvanized steel window well ladders that bolt directly to the well and foundation. Ask about this when requesting your quote.

Window Well FAQ

What size does my window well need to be in Calgary?

The Alberta Building Code requires a minimum of 760 mm (30 inches) of clear space in front of the egress window opening. The well must also be wide enough to accommodate the full width of the window plus frame. We size every well to meet code — if it doesn't pass inspection, it doesn't leave our site.

Is a window well included in your egress window installation package?

Yes. A galvanized steel window well with drainage stone placement is included in our base installation package ($2,100–$2,800 + GST per window). Cedar and composite upgrades are available as add-ons. See full pricing →

Does a window well need drainage?

Yes — always. A window well without drainage collects water and pushes it against your foundation. We install drainage gravel at the base of every well and ensure proper backfill grading. For problem areas, weeping tile connection is available on request.

Do I need a window well cover?

Code doesn't require a cover, but we strongly recommend one. Covers keep debris, rain, and snow out of the well — protecting the window and reducing maintenance. Our covers are openable from inside without tools so they don't impede emergency egress.

My window well is flooding. What should I do?

A flooding window well is usually a drainage problem — clogged drainage stone, poor grading, or missing weeping tile connection. If you have an existing window well that keeps filling with water, contact us and we can assess and fix the drainage issue.

Can you install a window well in winter?

Yes — we operate year-round. Frozen ground requires more excavation effort but we handle it. Window well installation in winter is the same as any other season: same quality, same warranty, just harder ground to dig.
